A one-pack stabiliser is a collection of additives used in the PVC manufacturing process.

The additives are a mixture of different compounds, such as oxidizers and lubricants. Stabilizers in a single pack can either be lubricated or not. Non-Lubricated One Pack Stabilizers are high performance stabilisers with unique performance-enhancing designs. One Pack Stabilizers perform crucial functions both during processing and during the product's service life. Along with stearates and lubricants that are made in solid form, lead-based one-pack stabilisers are metal complexes. Non-Toxic When combined with co-stabilizers and lubricants, One Pack Stabilizers, which are based on calcium, zinc, and barium, produce a product devoid of heavy metals.

Usages –

For the extrusion of rigid pipes, pressure/non-pressure pipes, casings, and capping, lubricated one pack stabilisers are employed. Rigid PVC Pipes, Conduits, and Suction Pipe formulas employ non-lubricated one pack stabilisers. One Pack Stabilizers are widely utilised in the building, medical, packaging, furniture, agricultural, telecommunications, and transportation industries. One Pack Stabilizers are excellent PVC formulation heat stabilisers. They are resistant to decomposition at high temperatures. The majority of them are non-dusting powders. Calendaring, injection moulding, and plastisol coating industries employ mixed metal liquid stabilisers. They include lead, cadmium, and barium, metals that have exceptional thermal stability. In addition to being One Pack Stabilizers, Metal Octoates also speed up the curing or hardening of oxidizable coatings.

Stabilisers:

Heat and light cause the PVC molecule to become unstable. PVC is heated, which breaks the polymer chains and releases gaseous hydrochloric acid. More breakdown is catalysed by the HCl, and this explosive degradation can release significant amounts of caustic HCl and other hazardous gases. While polymer chains are also broken apart by ultraviolet radiation exposure, heat breakdown occurs significantly more quickly.

Heat Stabilisers:

PVC needs to be stabilised against the effects of heat in order to be processed at processing temperatures. The majority of stabilisers have metal components that interact with HCl to prevent further deterioration. They are complexes, soaps, or metal salts. PVC stabilisation is a broad topic, and they come in second place to plasticizers in UPVC formulations and flexible PVC formulations, respectively. Several of the most significant families include:

Stabiliser application areas:

Heat Stability Type the Most Important Applications Leads are not suggested. Very good, especially in the long run. Pipes and Fittings, Sleeves, and Profiles Cheapest. Simple Application. Toxic in some cases.

Tins Best Transparent Tubing and Sheeting, High Quality Pipes, Lead Sulphide Staining Medical The most expensive stabiliser.

Ca - Zn

Non-Toxic, Moderate ROHS Cables Extrusions and pipes for a history of extreme temperatures.

Ba- Cd Footwear, Calendared goods, and Good Leather Cloth Applications that are non-toxic

For high heat history, use a Cd - Zn moderate foamed leather cloth.

Stearates of metal

Sole Stabiliser with low co-stabilisers and lubricating effect.

With the backdrop of Heavy Metal environment pollution concerns, newer families of heat stabilisers are being provided. This trend is being led by organic stabilisers and calcium zincs.

Lead stabilisers have historically been the most common due to their inexpensive cost and excellent stabilisation effect.

- Stabilisers for Lead: The following are examples of common Lead Stabilisers:

TBLS stands for Tri Basic Lead Sulphate. It is a strong heat stabiliser because it contains approximately 80% PbO, the active element in absorbing and neutralising HCl before it is freed during heating. It is non-lubricating and opaque; hence, it cannot be utilised in Transparent/Translucent applications.

- Dibasic Lead Stearate (DBLS). A lubricating stabiliser that is highly beneficial for lubrication at the extruder's mixing and metering zone. Translucent.

- LS stands for Lead Stearate. Lead is the weakest stabiliser. Strong external lubrication, especially in the early phases of extrusion. Translucent.

- Other lead stabilisers, such as Dibasic Lead Phosphite, which is used when light stability is critical, and Dibasic Lead Phthalate, which is used for high-speed extrusions, are not included in this article since they have a specialised use.

Calcium stearate and stearic acid are frequently used in conjunction with lead stabilisers to balance the lubrication. CS is a poor stabiliser but a good internal lubricant, particularly at the barrel discharge and die head. Stearic acid is a powerful external lubricant that can cause screw slippage and poor gelation if used excessively.

Lead Stabilisers' Lead Content

One downside of Lead stabilisation systems is that effective, balanced formulations need the use of all of the Lead stabilisers, as well as Calcium Stearate and a few other lubricants. Other systems, such as tins and mixed metals, typically contain one grade of stabiliser and one or two lubricants. Leads may need the precise weighing of six or seven elements, which necessitates skilful operation.
